To the Voters and Residents of Hillsborough County:
On behalf of the South Tampa Chamber and our business community, we are proud to support the renewal of the Hillsborough County Public Schools half-penny sales tax referendum this November.
A strong public education system is essential to a strong economy and a thriving community. Since voters approved the half-penny sales tax in 2018, Hillsborough County Public Schools has made significant investments in school facilities, safety, technology, and infrastructure across the district.
These investments benefit far more than our schools. They help create a stronger community, support local businesses and jobs, contribute to workforce development, and help ensure that Hillsborough County can attract and retain families and employers.
The half-penny sales tax has also created a dedicated source of funding for capital improvements that otherwise would be difficult to address through existing funding. More than $800 million in projects have been awarded to local businesses, demonstrating the economic impact of this investment throughout our community.
The November referendum is a renewal of the existing half-penny sales tax for another 10 years, beginning January 1, 2029. It is not a new tax or an increase to the current rate. The program also includes independent oversight, public reporting, and audits to promote accountability for these funds.
The South Tampa Chamber believes investing in our schools is an investment in the future of Hillsborough County. Our students are our future workforce, entrepreneurs, business owners, and community leaders, and they deserve safe, modern learning environments that prepare them for success.
For these reasons, the South Tampa Chamber is proud to support the renewal of the half-penny sales tax and encourages our members and the broader business community to support this important investment in the future of Hillsborough County.
Sincerely,
Kelly Flannery
